"As land creatures, the alien world of open water reveals to me what I really am (and what I am not) with brutal honesty. My paintings are investigations of my view of the ocean in light and form as seen through the unknown. When I am in the ocean, the abyss beneath me makes me feel both curious and vulnerable. The figures in these paintings are reduced to a sliver of a portrait overwhelmed by the sea. The hills and valleys in the layers of waves wrapping around a human being destabilizes the viewer. Neither the water nor the figure are the subject; the paintings are about the relationship between them and how it describes what it feels like to exist. " - Shane McClatchey
